In some discussion at BCNET, the discipleship team looked at how discipleship is accomplished and came away with 3 basic strategies/formats.  These, of course, are not exhaustive, but may provide a foundation for ministries to think about as they encourage students to mature in their faith.

      • Propositional- This discipleship strategy focuses on information exchange-learning. It is knowledge-based and cognitive. The emphasis is on imparting biblical knowledge to the student(s).

      • Relational – This is life to life strategy.  It may involve a mentor and/or a group studying material.  It is developing that ongoing relational intimacy while pursuing spiritual intimacy.

                                               -discussion based

                                               -asking the tough questions

      • Experiential – This component is bringing Truth to life through strategic experiences.

-utilize music, movies, and arts in process

                                                -leadership 1:8 (Kentucky Baptist model)

                                                -outdoor adventure

                                                -Becoming GREEN

We have done a lot in what you have labeled as the propositional model, trying to impart theology and information to students, hoping they would incorporate it into their lives. What we have found is that there are some who do that, but those are usually the people who are growing on their own anyway in the Word.

The ones we need to be more focused on need more relational attention. They need to see it lived out, over time, and useful in some way. They are usually interested in what matters to or affects them, and the only way they can determine that for themselves is to see it over time in soemone else.

So we have really seen that relational walking together is almost inpossible to seperate from it.
